Women’s Tennis Heads to Houston for Two Matches

HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis program kicks off a five-match road trip Friday in Houston.

Last Time Out

Last weekend, UTRGV pushed Texas State in a 5-2 loss, with four singles matches entering third sets and the Vaqueros earning wins on court two and three from juniors Rhea Makesar and Hitakamya Narwal, respectively.

Makesar defeated Texas State's Charlotte Roesch in a three-set match where she dominated in sets one and three to secure the 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, Narwal defeated Tadawi Mauchi in a gritty, come-from-behind three-set match, winning 6-7 (7:4), 6-3, 6-2.

The following day, UTRGV earned its first win of the season, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville 6-1 on the road. The Vaqueros started by sweeping the doubles session with 6-3 wins on all three courts. In singles, UTRGV earned straight-sets wins on courts 2-6 to pick up the team victory.

New Mexico – Feb. 6, 12 p.m. – Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility – Houston, Texas

UTRGV will open the weekend with a neutral-site match against New Mexico (UNM) Friday. The Vaqueros are 1-0 against the Lobos all-time, winning their one and only matchup 4-3, at home, in 2018.

UNM, a member of the Mountain West Conference, is 2-0 this season, earning 7-0 sweeps over Western New Mexico and CSU Pueblo in their season opener last weekend.

Houston – Feb. 7, 2:30 p.m. – Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility – Houston, Texas

UTRGV will then battle Houston (UH) in a true road match on Saturday. The Vaqueros are 1-14 all-time against the Cougars.

UTRGV won the most recent match against Houston, a thrilling 4-3 finish in 2024, which saw UTRGV win on courts one, four, five, and six to secure the win.

This season, UH, a member of the Big 12 Conference, is 5-0 and has not lost one point this season, earning sweeps against UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount, North Texas, and UT Arlington.

Houston is home to two ranked doubles teams, the duo of Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouoi are ranked at No. 82 while Petja Drame and Elizaveta Morozova are four sports behind at No. 86.
