NEW ORLEANS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team rolled to its sixth consecutive win Saturday with a 71-53 defeat of the New Orleans (UNO) Privateers in a Southland Conference (SLC) game at Lakefront Arena, hitting four milestones in the process.
UTRGV's (15-9, 12-3 SLC) win was the 100
th for head coach
Lane Lord at the institution. It's the ninth road win of the season, which is the most road victories in program history. UTRGV's 12 conference wins are a new single-season record for the second season in a row. Senior forward
Charlotte O'Keefe recorded her 10
th double-double with 14 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and one block – bringing her career blocks total to 134, which is a program record.
Freshman forward
Chazlyn Dettor scored 17 points with five rebounds, scoring 10 of her points in a third quarter that flipped the game fully in favor of the Vaqueros. Junior guard
Jalayah Ingram tabbed her fifth double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Redshirt junior guard
Erin Maguire added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Shanihya Brown led UNO (2-21, 2-13 SLC) with 18 points while
Sharon Smith added 10.
Mikayla Johnson had a team-high eight rebounds.
New Orleans started the game strong, opening up a 10-6 lead and preventing the Vaqueros from scoring for the first three minutes as they went 0-for-7 from the field. Maguire got the offense going, scoring four in a row with a nice pull-up jumper and a fastbreak layup off a long feed from Ingram.
UTRGV kept UNO scoreless for the final 5:14 of the first quarter and went on an 18-0 run that carried into the second quarter to take control up 24-10. The Vaqueros defense was effective and they dominated the boards in the stretch. Sophomore guard
Kayla Lorenz made a pair of threes to help swing the momentum to UTRGV, and O'Keefe made a long three at the end of the first quarter to have her team in the lead.
The Privateers went on a pair of 5-0 runs in the second quarter to get within 32-24 at halftime. Ingram was facilitating well, spreading the floor as UTRGV showcased excellent ball movement to create open midrange looks and keep the lead at the break.
Dettor was dominant as the Vaqueros started pounding the ball inside in the third quarter. She scored 10 of UTRGV's 23 points in the frame and was 4-for-5 from the field with four rebounds. She was the key to a 12-0 run that grew the lead to 44-26 and took the wind out of UNO's sails. Lorenz added her third triple at the end of the quarter to send the Vaqueros to the final 10 minutes leading 55-36.
Dettor and Ingram kept the Vaqueros trucking along early in the fourth. After a three from Dettor, the lead was 62-36, and Lord turned to the bench. Freshman forward
Rylie Whitehair scored five points in the fourth with a three-pointer to keep the Privateers at arm's length.
The Vaqueros will be back at the UTRGV Fieldhouse Thursday to face Lamar in a key SLC game at 6:30 p.m. to kick off
