ABILENE, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros track & field teams opened the outdoor season Friday with Day 1 of the Wes Kittley Invitational hosted by Abilene Christian at Elmer Gray Stadium. 
 
Freshman Matic Vidmar made his UTRGV debut and went straight into the outdoor record books in men's javelin. He finished third in the event with a throw of 58.36 meters, good for No. 3 in program history. 
 
Friday's running events were all distance races and the Vaqueros were represented in the women's and men's 1,500-meter run. Sophomore Lilian Mateo finished fourth in the women's race with a time of 4:46.44. In the men's competition, sophomore Nirmit Dahiya opened his outdoor campaign with a third-place finish in 3:56.79. 
 
The Vaqueros will start Day 2 of the meet at 12 p.m. Saturday with field events. Running events commence at 12:30 p.m.
