BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team battled but fell, 4-3, to the Lamar (LU) Cardinals Saturday at Thompson Family Tennis Center.

Sam Whitehead and sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel combined for a 6-2 win over
Maxwell Lindstedt and
Leon Nickel on court one.
Meanwhile, juniors
Ivo Isqueiro and
Santiago Serrano cruised to a 6-3 win over
Fabian Anthin and
Axel Bergh on court two to solidify the doubles win for UTRGV.
In singles play, Isqueiro wrapped up his match first, a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lindstedt on court two. Isqueiro and Lindstedt traded games until Isqueiro earned the first break of the set to go up 3-1. After taking a 4-1 lead, Lindstedt rallied back to make it 4-4 before Isqueiro held his serve and broke Lindstedt to earn a 6-4 first set win. In the second, the pair were knotted at 2-2 before Isqueiro won four straight games to give UTRGV a 2-0 lead in the match.
The next court to finish was number five where junior
Will Roberts defeated
Louis Drapeau 6-2, 6-4 to give UTRGV a 3-0 lead. Roberts earned two breaks in the first set, the first at 1-1 and then again at 4-2 to secure a dominant 6-2 first set win. Then, the duo traded games until 3-3 when Roberts broke through to earn a 4-3 advantage. Drapeau bounced back to make it 4-4 before Roberts picked up his second consecutive break to make it 5-4. A solid service game closed out the match for Roberts.
The rest of the courts were pushed to deciding third sets. On three of the courts, LU had won the first set. After over two hours of battling, LU pulled off the comeback with wins on courts one, three, four, and six.
UTRGV will round out their first SLC road trip Monday at Incarnate Word Monday at 11 a.m.
