RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that junior
Carlos Vallejo, of the baseball team, is UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Vallejo was nearly perfect in his first start of the season pitching 4.0 hitless innings to lead the Vaqueros to a 5-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
Vallejo was perfect through 3.2 innings before allowing his lone baserunner via a walk. Vallejo set new career-highs with 4.0 innings pitched and 54 pitches thrown. He struck out three while inducing five groundouts and four flyouts.
On the season, Vallejo is sporting a 2.60 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 17 while holding opponents to a .197 batting average.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Rice at 6:30 p.m. at Reckling Park.
