RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) head football coach
Travis Bush announced on Monday the hiring of
Cameron Herrera, who was a player personnel and recruiting operations assistant at Texas the last three seasons, as the new assistant director of football operations/recruiting coordinator.
Herrera will serve as the primary football contact for recruiting operations, including game day visits, transfer portal logistics, and prospect evaluations. He will also assist director of football operations & administration
John Simmons with team travel, community service initiatives, academics, and additional operational responsibilities as needed.
"This is an important addition to our support staff," Simmons said. "Cam's experience in recruiting at the University of Texas stood out immediately and his passion for the Valley made him the right fit for us. He's a rising star in this profession and will make a strong impact on our program and our student-athletes."
While at Texas, Herrera's responsibilities included assisting with official and unofficial visits, coordinating coaches' recruiting travel, maintaining the ARMS database, supporting transfer portal logistics, and completing special projects for the General Manager, Director of Recruiting, and Director of Player Personnel.
"I am ecstatic to join the UTRGV Vaqueros football program," Herrera said. "Coach Bush,
John Simmons, and the entire staff have done an extraordinary job building the program that led to a 9-3 record in their inaugural season. When the opportunity came up to join the program and help continue that success, I knew I could not pass up on it. Not only am I excited to join the program, but the chance to help continue building a football program in the community I was born and raised in is not an opportunity very many people in this profession get the chance to do. I have the opportunity to come back home and work in the industry I love which is something that means the world to me."
A native of the Rio Grande Valley, Herrera graduated from McAllen Memorial High School in 2018 and began his collegiate career at UTRGV before transferring to Texas. He served as a student manager for the Texas softball team in 2021 and 2022 while also working as a sports medicine aide for the men's basketball team in 2021-22.
Herrera graduated from Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management in 2022 and a Master of Education in Sport Management in 2024.
