LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Little Rock Trojans 5-4 on Tuesday at Gary Hogan Field.
Junior
Armani Raygoza led the Vaqueros (18-22) offensively by going 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI. Senior
Thomas Williams went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
Junior
Rocco Garza Gongora opened the game with a walk and a stolen base. He scored on a one-out Raygoza RBI-single by to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.
The Vaqueros put two on with one out in the top of the fourth on walks by senior
Hank Warren and Garza Gongora. Williams hit an RBI-single, putting runners at first and third. During the next at-bat, Williams took off for second and got himself in a long run down. A throw from first went into the outfield, allowing Williams to reach second while Garza Gongora scored. Raygoza capped the inning with an RBI-single, putting the Vaqueros up 4-0.
Sophomore
Mason Engel retired the first 10 batters he faced. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, the Trojans (24-17) got their first two hits, putting runners at second and third. After a strikeout,
Nolan Freund hit a two-run single to bring the Trojans within 4-2.
Engel struck out three while allowing three hits in a career-high tying 4.0 innings.
In the fifth, the Trojans loaded the bases with one out and scored on a walk and a hit batsman that forced-in runs to tie the game at 4.
That's where the score stayed until the ninth, when
Nico Baumbach hit a leadoff single off senior
Anthony Garcia (1-1). After a sacrifice bunt,
Cooper Chaplain hit a walk-off double.
That made a winner of
Tag Andrews (1-0), who struck out both batters he faced in the ninth.
UTRGV and Little Rock complete the series on Wednesday at 1 p.m. on
ESPN+.
