NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field teams had four student-athletes score and seven secure spots in Saturday's finals during Day 1 of the Southland Conference (SLC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Freshman
Matic Vidmar earned the silver medal in the men's javelin with a toss of 64.54 meters, good for No. 2 in program history. He was the leader after the first three rounds, but the eventual champion overtook his top mark on his final attempt.
Senior
Efe Latham put the first women's points on the board in hammer throw. She took seventh with a mark of 50.41 meters. In the women's long jump, freshman
Saniyah Richardson hit a personal best 5.66 meters to finish 12
th.
Junior
Lilian Mateo and senior PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz both got on the scoreboard in the women's 10,000-meter run. Mateo finished sixth in 36:41.15, the No. 3 time in program history. Cruz ran a personal best 37:06.07 to finish seventh with the fourth-best time in program history.
The SLC Outdoor Championships continue Friday with field events set to start at 12:30 p.m. and track events starting at 5 p.m. Fans can watch the evening session on ESPN+.
The Vaqueros advanced two to the finals in both the women's 200-meter dash and men's 1,500-meter run. In the women's 200, sophomore
Jizzale Davis ran 23.65 and senior
Kaliyah Poston ran 23.99 to punch their tickets to the final as the fourth and seventh-fastest qualifiers. All qualifiers for the race were based on time and there was no automatic ticket for winning a heat. Davis tied the seventh-fastest time in program history in the race and junior
Treasure Vallerie hit a personal best in 24.02, just missing the finals with a ninth-place finish.
In the men's 1,500, senior
Abraham Morales and junior
Nirmit Dahiya will be moving on. Morales qualified on time in 3:54.41 and Dahiya won his heat to earn the automatic ticket in 3:57.00. Freshman Weslaco East alum
Adrianno Gonzalez ran a personal best 4:04.00 in the event.
Junior
N Vanee Anchike won her heat in the women's 1,500-meter run and advanced to the final as the No. 1 time qualifier in 4:27.22, the No. 2 time in program history behind her own program record. Freshman
Talyna Ligier secured her spot in the final of the women's 400-meter hurdles with a fourth-place finish in prelims, running 1:00.97, which is the ninth-fastest time in program history.
Rounding out the finals qualifiers was senior
Daniel Siaffa, who finished sixth in the men's 400-meter hurdles prelims in 52.24. Senior
Jaylen Critton narrowly missed advancing with a ninth-place finish.
Sophomore
Richard Young finished 27
th to lead UTRGV's men's 200-meter dash competitors.
UTRGV totaled four personal bests and made six entries into the outdoor program record books Thursday.
