BRYAN – Freshman
Jorge Martin Sampedro of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's golf team finished in 10
th place to qualify for the NCAA National Tournament on Tuesday at the Bryan Regional on Tuesday at Traditions Club.
Sampedro finished with a three-round score of 208 finishing as the top individual not part of the five qualifying teams. Sampedro carded a second round two-under par 70 and a final round three-under par 69 as he became the program's first NCAA Division I qualifier since
David Steffan did so in 1978.
Sampedro kept his scorecard clean all week as he recorded nine birdies and just one bogey. Sampedro finished ahead of 12 golfers ranked inside the top-100 in the Scoreboard rankings, including No. 7 Williams Sides of SMU.
Sampedro will compete at the NCAA National Tournament at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. from May 29-June 3.
As a team, UTRGV finished in 12
th place ahead of Miami (OH) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Vaqueros posted a three-round score of 878 as they improved in the second round by six shots with a 289 before posting a final round 294.
Junior
Esteban Gonzalez finished tied for 48
th with a three-round score of 222 as he posted back-to-back rounds of three-over par 75. Sophomore
Gabriel Dulon Villoslada finished tied for 54
th with a three-round score of 224 after posting a second round two-under par 70 and a final round 79.
Junior
Rodolphe Cicala and freshman
Brock Porter finished tied for 65
th with three-round scores of 231. Cicala posted a second round 75 and closed out the regional with a final round 77. Porter bounced back with a second round 74 before closing out with a final round one-over par 73.
Texas won the regional with a three-round score of 819. Host Texas A&M, Chattanooga, North Carolina, and Tennessee all qualified for the NCAA National Tournament.
