FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros had three men's outdoor track & field student-athletes kick off the action at the NCAA West First Round Wednesday at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
UTRGV had representatives competing in three events, two on the track and one in field, trying to tab top marks to keep their seasons alive. In track events, the top three finishers in each heat plus the next six best times claimed the 24 spots in the quarterfinals. Senior
Daniel Siaffa finished 42
nd in the men's 110-meter hurdles first round with a time of 14.37 and junior
Jefferson Jean ran 14.99 to take 45
th.
Siaffa raced again just over two hours later in the men's 400-meter hurdles first round. He finished 38
th with a time of 51.76, tying the ninth-fastest race in program history. Siaffa improved five spots since his first NCAA West race in the 400 hurdles in 2024. He wraps up his three years at UTRGV as the No. 2 400 hurdler in program history with a personal best time of 51.17 and with the program record in the 110 hurdles of 13.84.
Javelin was a single-round competition with athletes getting only three attempts to secure a top 12 mark, no ties, to advance to Eugene. Freshman
Matic Vidmar had to endure a schedule change, which moved javelin to the late start, and the elements. Rain fell consistently throughout his warmup and the entirety of Flight 2, but Vidmar still delivered a record-book throw. He finished 31
st with a mark of 61.19 meters, coming up with the top toss on his final attempt to take third in his flight with the fourth-best throw in program history. Vidmar made six entries into the outdoor record books during his rookie campaign and ends the season as the program record holder.
The meet continues Thursday when the women take center stage. Pending possible weather changes, the Vaqueros will commence competition at 6 p.m. on the track with five student-athletes running in six events. UTRGV's lone women's field event qualifier, senior
Efe Latham, will participate in the second flight of the shot put first round, which starts at 7 p.m.
Friday will be the final day of competition for the men's qualifiers. Freshman
Antwoine Warren will take on the high jump semifinals scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Warren will be in the second of two flights.
