CARLSBAD, Calif. – Freshman Jorge Martin Sampedro of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team battled through the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships to post a seven-over par 79 on Friday at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course.
 
Sampedro will play with the same group but will tee off on Saturday at 4:02 p.m. (CT) off the 10^th hole. The North Course played challenging as Sampedro carded a 40 on the front nine that featured seven pars, one bogey, and a triple bogey. His back nine was composed of one birdie, five pars, two bogeys, and a double bogey. 
 
Below is a hole-by-hole breakdown of Sampedro's first round. 
 
Hole 1 - 402 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit a 2 iron to left side of the fairway and then hit an iron to back right of the green. He then left his birdie putt short before sinking his par putt. 
 
Hole 2 - 622 yards Par 5
Sampedro hit his driver into the right side of fairway. He then hit his second shot to about 120 yards setting up a wedge on his approach shot that ended up in the back of the green. He left his birdie putt short before sinking his par putt. 
 
Hole 3 - 190 yards Par 3
Sampedro hit a 6 Iron off the tee that went long and ended up on the fringe. He then almost sinks his birdie putt as he hit the pin and tapped in for par. 
 
Hole 4 - 383 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit a 2 iron off tee to the right side of fairway that left him about 110 yards out. He then hit a wedge onto the green pin high just left of hole. He left his birdie putt just short and tapped in for par.
 
Hole 5 - 427 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit a 3 wood off the tee to middle of the fairway, just short of the fairway bunker. He followed with a perfect 9 iron to green leaving him inside 10 feet. He missed the birdie putt left and tapped in for par.
 
Hole 6 - 571 yards Par 5
Sampedro hit driver off tee to the left side of the fairway. He almost reaches the green in two with a 3 wood. He then chips it on green, but the ball catches a slope and rolls past hole and off the green. He then pitches it through green, putts from the fringe for par that rolls through the green, he then pitches on green and two-putts for triple bogey. 
 
Hole 7 - 521 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit driver off tee and misses the fairway to the right. He then hits a long iron from rough and lands short of the green. His pitch falls short of the hole leaving long par putt that he leaves short but sinks his next putt for bogey.
 
Hole 8 - 203 yards Par 3
Sampedro hit an iron short of the green and then gets up-and-down for par capping it with a putt from about eight feet.
 
Hole 9 - 426 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit driver off the tee to the dead center of the fairway. He then hit a 9 iron to front of the green leaving a long double breaking putt. He then putted his ball to three feet and tapped in for par.
 
Hole 10 - 596 yards Par 5
Sampedro hit driver off the tee to the center of the fairway. He then went for the green in two with a 3 wood leaving it pin high just off the green. He then pitched it to five feet and saw his birdie putt lip leaving him with a tap par. 
 
Hole 11 - 355 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit a 2 iron off the tee into fairway leaving him with just 53 yards left to the green. He hit a wedge to about 6 feet but his lipped out his birdie putt and tapped in for par. 
 
Hole 12 226 yards Par 3
Sampedro hit an iron off the tee and his shot rolled through the green. He then got up-and-down for par.
 
Hole 13 - 428 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit a 3 wood off tee to left edge of fairway. He left his second shot short of green, then chipped it to about six feet. He missed his par putt and tapped in for bogey.
 
Hole 14 - 517 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit driver off the tee and put it in middle of the fairway. He then hit a 2 iron off the right of the green, and his ball went into the hazard. He dropped and chipped on the green and followed with two putts for a double bogey. 
 
Hole 15 - 371 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit a 2 iron to far left of the fairway and then followed with a wedge to the green. He left it about 15 feet to the hole and drained his birdie putt for his first birdie of the day. 
 
Hole 16 - 162 yards Par 3
Sampedro hit a pitching wedge off the tee to center of the green. He missed birdie putt and tapped in for par. 
 
Hole 17 - 491 yards Par 4
Sampedro hit driver off the tee into center of the fairway. He then hit a 9 iron to left edge of green leaving him a long putt for birdie. He left it just inches short and tapped in for par. 
 
Hole 18 - 597 yards Par 5
Sampedro hit driver off the tee to center of the fairway. He then hit a long iron to about 100 yards of the green. He then left his third shot short of the green and then chipped it on to about 15 feet. He left his par putt just short and tapped in for bogey to close out his round.
