Grizzlies to Visit the Valley in 2031

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday the scheduling of a two-game football series between UTRGV and Montana, with the Vaqueros visiting Montana in 2030 and the Grizzlies making the return trip in 2031.

The road game is scheduled for Aug. 31, 2030, and the home game is set for Aug. 30, 2031.

Montana was the No. 3 overall seed in the 2025 FCS Playoffs, advancing to the semifinals while finishing the season with a 13-2 record.

The Grizzlies were the No. 2 overall seed in 2023, finishing runner-up by advancing to the national championship game.

Overall, Montana is the FCS record holder in playoff appearances with 29, winning two national championships, and finishing runner-up six times. The Grizzlies have also won 19 Big Sky Conference Championships.

In the stands, Montana led the FCS in overall attendance for the third consecutive season in 2025 with 252,636 fans across six games for an average of 25,264, the second-best mark in the FCS and just above their stadium capacity of 25,217, making Montana one of eight teams to average over 100% of capacity (100.18%). If the Grizzlies were an FBS institution, their overall attendance would have ranked 58th, ahead of 10 Power 4 programs. UTRGV ranked right ahead of Montana in percentage of capacity, ranking sixth at 104.49% while welcoming 87,774 fans, the 11th-best in FCS, across seven games for an average of 12,539, which ranked 15th.

"We are extremely excited to sign a home and home agreement with Montana as this gives us an opportunity to compete against one of the top premier programs in the nation. As our program matures, this will give UTRGV football an opportunity to measure the progress we've made. Not only will our fans enjoy traveling to Missoula, but this series also gives our fans a marquee national FCS matchup at Vackar Stadium to open the 2031 season," UTRGV Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. "Our aspiration is to build the same type of consistent national contender with incredible fan support as the University of Montana. Our program experienced a strong start in our inaugural season, and we look forward to continuing to grow before going head-to-head with the Griz in 2030 and 2031."
