CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team wrapped up their fall opener at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open Sunday at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
Across three days of competition, UTRGV battled against some of the best mid-major programs across the state of Texas and the Southland Conference including, Abilene Christian (ACU), Lamar (LU), UIW, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), and UTSA.
 
Singles Play
 
Fifth-year team captain Ivo Isqueiro led the Vaqueros in the top draw of singles, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, his quarterfinal match over Lamar's Leon Nickel. Isqueiro battled, but ultimately fell, in third set tiebreakers against ACU's Dennis Dutine and Luis Jose Nakamine.
 
In the green draw, junior Montana State transfer Camille Chantron knocked off ACU's Jonas Keck 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10:5) in the quarterfinal. On the opposite side of the draw, junior Campbell transfer Aleksander Hudjec battled to a gritty three-set win over LU's Lukas Hamacher 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11:9). The opening round victories earned them both their first singles wins as Vaqueros. Both battled in their respective semifinals but ultimately fell in the round.
 
After dropping his opening match, junior Loic Young Kriegel picked up a swift, bounce-back victory over UIW's Carlos Mendoza Hernandez, winning 6-2, 6-4, in the orange draw. Young fought hard in the West Final, pushing LU's Vicente Monge to the third set after winning the second 6-2, but ultimately fell in the deciding tiebreaker.
 
Senior Paolo Bonaguro dropped the opening set 6-1 against UIW's Alexandre Chauvel Gobin before winning the second set 6-4 to force the deciding tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Bonaguro outlasted Chauvel Gobin, winning 10-8 to advance to the Yellow Semifinals. Bonaguro dropped the semifinal match to LU's Fabian Anthin before retiring in the 3-4 Playoff.
 
In the round robin Gold Draw, freshman Eoghan Samyn dropped his opening set 6-2 to LU's Dan Milburn before bouncing back with a 6-3 second set victory. Samyn battled in the deciding tiebreaker but ultimately lost, 11-9. In his second match of the tournament, Samyn dominated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's (TAMUCC) Paxton Oshea 6-0, 6-1, to earn the first collegiate win of his career.
 
In a series of extra matches, Chantron earned a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over ACU's Merse Deli; meanwhile, Bellorio defeated Andres Delgadillo from TAMUCC in a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10:6) battle on the final day of competition. Chan dropped the first set against Hamacher 6-3, before battling back to a 6-2 win in the second. Chan carried the momentum into the deciding tiebreaker, winning 10-6.
 
Doubles Play
 
The Vaqueros had two doubles teams in Flight A of the tournament, Isqueiro and junior Santiago Serrano and Bonaguro and Young.
 
Bonaguro and Young cruised to a 6-3 win over UTSA's Timeo Bretin and Enzo Tafarelo Vargas in the quarterfinal before defeating the UIW duo of Chauvel Gobin and Alejandro Flores Monteverde 6-4 in the semifinal. The duo would eventually fall in the final to TAMUCC's Mikel Garmendia and Egor Gorin.
 
Isqueiro and Serrano dropped their quarterfinal match to the eventual Flight A champions, 6-4. The duo came back strong in the West Semifinal, defeating LU's Maxwell Lindstedt and Nickel 6-2, before retiring due to injury in the West Final.
 
In Flight B, UTRGV was represented by Chantron and freshman Miguel Pinheiro Bellorio who dropped a tight quarterfinal match 7-6 (8:6) to the eventual Flight B champions, David Kirchner and Alejandro Verdasco from ACU. The duo earned a solid 6-3 win over Lamar's Louis Drapeau and Monge before falling to ACU's Jorge Aza Casaseca and Jonas Keck.
 
Hudjec and Samyn represented the Vaqueros in Flight C. They fought hard but dropped their quarterfinal match to UTSA's Joel Hansson and Gabriel Jalouneix, 7-6 (7:1). The duo fell in the West Semifinal before earning their first win in the South Final, defeating TAMUCC's Paxton Oshea and Nicolas Rivera Paz 6-3.
 
The Vaqueros will turn their attention to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional, which is set to run from Oct. 8-12 in Fort Worth, Texas.
