WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Junior
Gabriel Dulon Villoslada set the program record for lowest 54-hole individual score of 202 (67-65-70) en route to a third-place finish at the JT Poston Invitational Tuesday at Waynesville Inn & Golf Club.
Dulon Villoslada led The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to a record-setting three-round score of 835 (274-279-282) at the JT Poston Invitational, breaking the previous record of 839 set at the 1990 UTPA Golf Classic.
The Vaqueros finished in sixth place in the 17-team field, trailing only South Carolina (821), NC State (826), Virginia Tech (826), Southern Mississippi (828), and Lipscomb (831).
Sophomore
Brock Porter led the Vaqueros in the final round with a two-under 69, highlighted by an albatross on the 530-yard hole 10. On that hole, Porter ripped his drive 294 yards before pulling out his 4 iron for the final 236 yards. A perfect shot from Porter landed on the green and dropped into the hole as if he putted it from 7 yards away.
Porter rose 42 spots from his performance in round one to finish in a tie for 25
th with a three-round score of 210, which is tied for 20
th for lowest 54-hole individual score in UTRGV history.
Dulon Villoslada opened his round with a bogey before catching fire late on the front nine, recording three straight birdies on holes six through eight. After making par on nine, Dulon Villoslada eagled the par-5 10th to move to four-under for the round. He held steady over his final eight holes to secure the program record and his first top three finish as a Vaquero.
Senior
Esteban Gonzalez finished the day with an even-par 71 to finish tied for 21
st with a three-round total of 209, which ranks 19
th for lowest 54-hole individual score in UTRGV history. Gonzalez found his groove late in the front nine, birdieing three of the final five holes.
Freshman
Javier Domingo Calvo improved by three strokes on the final day, carding a one-over 72 to round out the scoring for the Vaqueros. Domingo Calvo started fast by eagling the 360-yard, par 4 first hole.
Senior
Eddie Lai and freshman
Pelayo Fernandez Mortera both posted a 78 in the final round to finish up their performance at the invitational. Lai posted a three-round score of 227 while Fernandez Mortera finished with a 228, which ranked tied for 94
th and 97
th, respectively.
The Vaqueros will face a quick turnaround as they head to the Bayou City Collegiate, hosted by Rice, from Monday-Tuesday.
