BEAUMONT, Texas — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team battled Lamar through 89 scoreless minutes before the Cardinals found the back of the net in the final minute, as UTRGV fell 1-0 Thursday at the LU Soccer Complex in its Southland Conference (SLC) opener.
Lamar's (4-1-3, 0-1 SLC)
Kamryn Harvey scored the game-winning goal with just nine seconds remaining, finding the bottom center of the net with her right foot at the 89:48 mark.
The Vaqueros (4-5, 0-1 SLC) controlled the opening half defensively, holding the Cardinals scoreless while creating several opportunities of their own. Junior
Isabella Burtini recorded two shots in the first half, including a shot on frame that was saved by Lamar goalkeeper
Keely Thomas. Sophomore
Sienna Church also put a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.
Lamar increased its offensive pressure after halftime, finishing with 17 shots, including six on goal. Sophomore
Mariana Amezcua kept the Vaqueros within striking distance with six saves, including a stop on Harvey just two seconds before the eventual game-winning goal.
UTRGV continued to generate opportunities late in the match. Junior
Rubi Ortiz had a shot saved in the 71
st minute, while Burtini and freshman
Anuhea Aalona each put shots on frame in the final 13 minutes. Thomas finished with five saves for Lamar.
Junior
Hannah Carrier recorded her first yellow card of the season in the 65
th minute.
The Cardinals held a 17-11 advantage in shots, 6-5 on goal, and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Vaqueros return to action Sept. 24, to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Complex, to continue SLC play.
