Men’s Golf in Third After Rain-Shortened First Day at Bayou City Collegiate

HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team sits in third place after rain suspended play during the second round of the Bayou City Collegiate, hosted by Rice, Monday at Westwood Golf Club.

UTRGV completed between 27 and 30 holes Monday after a 2-hour, 22-minute rain delay interrupted the second round.

The Vaqueros posted a four-under 284 in the first round and sit at even-par approximately halfway through round two. The Vaqueros trail UT Arlington (-12) and Rice (-11). Three other teams are under par for the course so far including Middle Tennessee (-3), Abilene Christian (-1), and Sam Houston (-1).

UTRGV also leads all Southland Conference squads in the tournament, sitting ahead of Lamar (+3), Houston Christian (+10), and UIW (+13).

Leading the charge was senior McAllen Memorial alum Esteban Gonzalez, who sits in fifth among the 83-person field with a five-under through 29 holes. Gonzalez shined, birdieing seven holes and reaching a bogey-free streak of 19 holes.

Sophomore Brock Porter finished the day in a tie for ninth after shooting three-under through 28 holes. Alongside Gonzalez, Porter posted a first-round score of 68, sinking six birdies through the first 18 holes, including three straight on holes five, six, and seven.

Senior Gabriel Dulon Villoslada rounded out the scoring for the Vaqueros in both rounds. Coming off a record-setting performance, Villoslada posted a two-over 74 in the first round but has battled to a one-under through 11 holes in the second round. Villoslada sits in a tie for 28^th after posting a one-over 118 through 29 holes.

Senior Eddie Lai, who is playing as an individual, currently sits at two-under through nine holes in the second round after posting three-over 75 in the first round. This puts Lai into a tie for 28^th with a one-over overall after the first day.

Junior Central Arkansas transfer Bogdan Sandrini ended the day in a tie for 38^th after going three-over through 30 holes.

Freshman Javier Domingo Calvo is in a tie for 56^th after shooting a three-over 75 in the first round and two-over in the second round. Domingo Calvo knocked in four birdies across his 29 holes on day one.

The Vaqueros will resume the second round Tuesday before playing the final round. Fans can follow along through live scoring here.
