Biography

2004 OUTLOOK: After just missing qualifying for regionals in the steeplechase last year, Cervantes will attempt to qualify this season.

2003 XC: Led the Broncs to victory by finishing fourth at the UTSA Whataburger Invitational, and followed that up with a fifth-place finish at the Texas A&M-CC Splash. Finished fourth at the Independent Championships, once again earning All-Independent honors, and finished off the year by coming in 44th at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.

2003 TRACK: Ran fifth fastest mile at UTPA, 4:20.61, at the Houston Indoor Opener last January 25th...Ran 3000 meters in 8:49.13 at the Houston Indoor Classic February 1, and his time ranks ninth on UTPA's best list....Outdoors, Cervantes won the 3000 mile Steeplechase at the Dogwood Invitational...His time of 9:12.11 in the steeplechase at the Texas Invitational May 3rd is the second best at UTPA...Ran 800 meters in 1:58.00 at the UTSA/Whataburger Invitational March 22nd.

2002 CROSS-COUNTRY: Cervantes was the Broncs' number two cross-country runner for much of the year. He had three top ten finishes this past season, capped off by a fifth-place finish at the Southern Independent Championship in Corpus Christi. He finished in 27:05, and earned All-Independent honors. Cervantes opened the season with a 22:44 effort at the Islander Opening Splash 4-Miler. At San Antonio, he was one of four Bronc runners in the top ten, as UTPA finished first with a season-best 36 points. Cervantes finished sixth, covering the four-mile course in a season-best effort of 21:08.

2001-02: Cervantes was UTPA's top cross-country runner in every race in which he competed. He picked up a victory against his former TAMU-CC teammates in a dual meet, and set a personal record for 10,000 meters at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship, with a time of 32:41.

2000-01: Won twice for Texas AM-Corpus Christi during the cross-country season, and twice more in track.

PREP: One of the Rio Grande Valley's best runners, Cervantes helped Weslaco capture three 32-5A District Championships. Twice the district champion at 1600 meters, he was a three-time track MVP for the Panthers. He also was a two-time district champion in cross-country, and a state qualifier. An accomplished bull rider, Cervantes finished third at the Texas State High School Rodeo Association Championship.
