UTRGV Athletics hired Andy Eggerth, who led Team USA at the 2017 Capital Cup and was the Kennesaw State Director of Track and Field and Cross Country from 2010-18, as an assistant coach on Dec. 9, 2019.
Eggerth works primarily with the jumpers and combined eventers while also assisting with recruiting.
2020 Indoor: Coached Idatonye Cheetham-West to five of the top 10 long jumps in program history, including a bronze medal at the WAC Championships.
During his time with Team USA, Eggerth coached Solomon Simmons to three personal record performances and an eighth-place finish as the World Championships. Simmons has also been USA runner up in the combined events three times under Eggerth’s tutelage
A two-time NCAA South Region Head Coach of the Year and an 18-time Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year, Eggerth developed 21 All-Americans, 72 NCAA qualifiers, 277 conference champions, 690 all-conference performers and 62 academic all-conference performers while at Kennesaw State. His student-athletes posted 54 conference record-setting performances. He also developed two student-athletes, Bilal Abdullah and Andre Dorsey, who competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Eggerth’s teams combined for 18 conference championships, including seven indoor men’s titles, seven outdoor men’s titles, two outdoor women’s titles, one indoor women’s title, and one cross country title. The men’s team was once ranked as high as No. 16 in the NCAA. His teams also earned three departmental community service awards.
Eggerth arrived at Kennesaw State after four years as an assistant coach at Kansas State, where he worked with sprinters and hurdlers while assisting with mid-distance and distance student-athletes. On top of his coaching duties, Eggerth also served as the assistant recruiting coordinator, assisted with fundraising and alumni relations, and managed equipment and apparel.
Eggerth started his collegiate coaching career at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he spent three years working with the sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and combined eventers. His student-athletes achieved 13 program records and seven freshman records.
Most recently, Eggerth founded and has been running MultiStars Track Club and Consulting in Atlanta, Ga. MultiStars is a non-profit organization with the primary goal of developing post-collegiate athletes to achieve their goals of not only making world championship and Olympic teams, but becoming medalists at that level.
Eggerth competed collegiately at Bemidji State, breaking 16 program records and one conference record while qualifying for the NCAA Championships in five events. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management. He went on to earn his Master of Science in Exercise Science from Syracuse while serving as a graduate assistant and working with sprinters and hurdlers. During this time, he was also competed in post-collegiate events.
After graduating, Eggerth worked for the National Sports Center (NSC) in Blaine, Minn., as the Track and Field Director for two years. He managed almost 200 athletes while organizing meets, planning the budget, hiring assistant coaches, recruiting athletes, and coaching the sprinters and hurdlers.
Eggerth was also an instructor for the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches Academy and wrote the physiology curriculum. He holds the International Association of Athletics Federation’s Level 5 "Elite Coach" certification in sprints and hurdles, USA Track & Field (USATF) level 3 certification in the Jumps, USTFCCCA certification in the combined events and throws, and has been to USATF level 2 certification schools in distance events, combined events, jumps, and throws. He is a certified strength and conditioning coach and has taken the USTFCCCA’s javelin, high jump, and combined events master coach certifications.
