Gabe Henry

Gabe Henry joined the program as a women’s basketball assistant coach on July 14, 2014.

Henry serves as the recruiting coordinator while overseeing all defensive schemes as the defensive coordinator.

Henry has helped to bring in the top recruiting class in the Western Athletic Conference two years in a row, starting with the No. 68 ranked class in the nation in 2015-16 according to the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.

In 2016-17, Henry coached a defense that allowed the third lowest field goal percentage in program history at .370. UTRGV had the second-highest rebounding average in program history at 39.73 per game while grabbing the third most total rebounds with 1,311. UTRGV also grabbed 315 steals, three short of tying the program record.

In 2015-16, Henry oversaw one of the best defensive units in program history, as UTRGV allowed just 61.6 points per game, the fifth best mark in program history, best in the WAC and 92nd best in the NCAA. UTRGV allowed its opponents to shoot just .371 from the field, the second lowest mark in program history, the best in the WAC and the 38th best in the NCAA. UTRGV only allowed a .306 three-point shooting percentage, the best mark in the WAC and 106th best in the NCAA. UTRGV also set new program records for rebounds per game (41.51), total rebounds (1,370) and blocks (121).

The 2014-15 squad was one of the top defensive units in program history as well, setting what were then new program records in rebounds per game (39.71) and total rebounds (1,350) as well as steals (318) and turnovers forced (701).

Henry spent the previous two seasons at Odessa, where he aided in all day-to-day operations of the basketball program, while also serving as recruiting coordinator. Henry coached and recruited nine All-Conference players and one All-American. The Lady Wranglers went 42-15 and qualified for the Region V Tournament each year.
 
Henry arrived at Odessa after a one-year stint at Central Methodist University (CMU), where he was instrumental in helping CMU achieve one of the greatest turnarounds in NAIA Division I history, going from five wins in 2010-11 to 17 wins and a third place finish after going 13-5 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play in 2011-12.
 
After a brief stint as an assistant coach on the University of Hawaii staff in 2010-11, Henry joined the University of Alaska Anchorage, helping the Seawolves finish off a 27-7 season and reach the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
 
Henry spent the 2009-10 season at Odessa as an assistant coach, helping the Lady Wranglers to a 23-8 record and a spot in the NJCAA Region V Tournament.
 
He spent the previous two seasons as director of basketball operations at Gonzaga, where he played a role in the Zags’ first-ever NCAA Tournament win, while helping to capture two West Coast Conference (WCC) Regular Season Championships, one WCC Tourney Championship, and one WNIT berth.
 
Originally from Brookfield, Mo., Henry earned his bachelor’s degree at Missouri Valley College, where he began his coaching career as a student assistant. Henry holds a master’s degree in sports & athletic administration from Gonzaga.

Henry and his wife, Alana, and their daughter, Avery, reside in Edinburg.
