LaToya Howell joined the Broncs prior to the 2011-12 season, reuniting with Broncs head coach Denny Downing, with whom she worked at Texas A&M-Commerce, after a two-year stint at Loyola University–Chicago.
At UTPA, Howell is deeply involved in recruiting, the development of the Broncs post players, and coordinating practice plans and agendas.
At Loyola, Howell was heavily involved with recruiting and scouting in addition to her on-court skill work with the Ramblers post players. She helped aid in the development of the tandem of Keisha Collins and Maggie McCloskey, who combined to form one of the Horizon League’s top backcourts during the 2009-10 season. Collins became the first Rambler since 2001 to record back-to-back seasons of at least 300 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists. During that season, Howell helped lead the Ramblers to a 15-15 record, their first .500 season since 2001-02.
Prior to Loyola, Howell spent time as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Commerce, working with perimeter players. The Lions had a record of 65-29 during the three years she was there.
Howell joined the Texas A&M-Commerce staff immediately following her playing career that started at the Air Force Academy and ended at Nebraska. She was named the Most Valuable Player as a freshman at Air Force, setting a single-season record with 90 steals, and followed that up be averaging 17.4 points and 7.0 assists per game as a sophomore before transferring to Nebraska.
After playing more than 20 minutes per game, primarily off the bench, in her first season in Lincoln, Howell started all 32 games her senior season and helped guide the Huskers to the WNIT Quarterfinals for the first time in school history. She dished out 159 assists that season, good for eighth on Nebraska’s single-season list, and reached double digits in assists against Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
