David Claybrooks begins his first season as an assistant coach for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Track and Field team. He will be responsible for the vertical and horizontal jumps groups.
Claybrooks comes to UTRGV after spending the last three season with the Lindsey Wilson College Track and Field program as an assistant Coach. Last season he guided the women’s team to a Mid-South Conference Outdoor Championship while helping the men’s team to back-to-back championships. The men finished tied for 11th overall at the 2016 NAIA Outdoor National Meet, which is the highest finish in program history. In 2014, he played a pivotal role in helping the Blue Raiders women’s track & field team capture the program’s first Mid-South Conference championship and also helped lead the men to a runner-up finish at the MSC Championships. During the Indoor season, eleven of his student-athletes qualified for Indoor Nationals with six of those earning All-American accolades.
During the outdoor track & field season, three men earned NAIA All-American honors while four men and eight women earned All Mid-South Conference honors, including, a Mid-South Conference Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year (Carmetrick Ross) and a Mid-South Conference Women’s Track & Field Freshman Athlete of the Year (Chanel Roberts).
Prior to his time at Lindsey Wilson College, Claybrooks was an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University for three seasons, helping the team to three cross country team titles and one men's indoor team title. In the 2010 Indoor season, two athletes made their way onto the Top-Five All-time list as school records were set in the women’s long jump and women’s triple jump. Claybrooks also spent a season at Iowa Western Community College as the recruiting coordinator and sprint, jumps and relay coach. Seven school records were broken and five athletes earned All-American honors that season.
Claybrooks earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Murray State University in 2005 and a master’s degree in physical education with a sports administration concentration from EKU in 2008. He is a USATF Level I Certified Track and Field and Cross Country Coach and a USATF Official and Master's Athlete.
