Broncs Take 0-1 Record Against Texas Lutheran

EDINBURG - The Pan American University Broncs carry an 0-1 record into Sunday's home soccer match with Texas Lutheran College. Game time is 2 p.m. Admission is free at the campus soccer field.

Last week the Broncs were upset by Incarnate Word College of San Antonio in a 3-1 thriller.

"We beat them twice last year," said first-year Coach Eloy Moran of Pan American. "They came better prepared because we're a Division I school. Also, we were overconfident."

The Broncs opened the scoring in the seventh minute when freshman forward Sammy Zavala's shot ricocheted off the crossbar and an alert Efren Lopez head the half-volley home.

"I waited until the ball bounce and headed it in," remarked Lopez, the senior halfback.

Pan American had other opportunites as well, hitting the post once and blowing a penalty kick.

Meanwhile, IWC's Crusaders equalized on a defensive error and minutes later added a second goal on a breakaway for a 2-1 halftime lead. IWC's third score came in the game's closing seconds on an emtpy-net goal. Pan American had pulled its goalie in a desperate attempt to tie.

It's the first loss the Broncs have suffered in 11 games, dating back to last season. Also snapped is a string of seven straight shotouts. The 3-1 loss began the Broncs' 19 game schedule.

" I've noticed a lot more intensity in practice lately," Moran said. "I still believe we have the potential to make the (NCAA) playoffs, but it's going to be a tough road."

Bronc soccer is competing as an independent this year, because soccer is not an official sport in the new American South Athletic Conference. Pan American belongs to the conference in 12 sports.
