Broncs Soccer to Face UTSA in Home Opener

EDINBURG - Pan American University's soccer Broncs will kick off their first home match Saturday at 2 p.m. The University of Texas at San Antonio will oppose them at the soccer field on the campus.

The Broncs will have a rocky climb in 1988 as they play 14 of their 18 games on the road.

As if that weren't bad enough, Coach Eloy Moran has scheduled such soccer dynamos as North Texas and Houston Baptist.

"I think we can go over.500 but it's going to be tough," he said.

Moran does have experience on his side--14 letterman, four new faces. Veterans "Salvador Garcia, Reveriano Hernandez and Sammy Zavala will be our main scorers," the coach said.

Moran's game plan will be to pressure other teams by tightly marking the ball carrier and the nearby receivers. "It's kind of like the full-court press in basketball," he explained.

Defensively, the Broncs have three goalies to plug the net. Sophomore Fredy Sanguinetti will start ahead of freshman Hunter Jorgenson. Jesse Murguia will play in the field and serve as an emergency back-up.

Soccer is not a sport in the American South Conference so Pan American will play an independent schedule.
