UTPA Wins Over Texas Lutheran 3-1

EDINBURG - Demian Morquin of Argentina launched two rockets into the net to carry the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs past Texas Lutheran in a fierce soccer game Sunday, 3-1.

The Broncs raised their record to 9-1 before a good crowd estimated at 250. TLC's Bulldogs fell to 5-6-1.

Jorge Cavazos found the corner of the net, assisted by Alector Cardenas, to put the Broncs ahead 2-1 with 13 minutes elapsed.

It stayed 2-1 until 14 minutes, when Morquin slammed a left-footed screamer into the corner, assisted by Mohsen Husain.

The insurance goal loomed large because the Broncs forced to play one man short the final 23 minutes. Referee Ibrahim Zakari of Harlingen ejected Marco Mejia for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The hard-hitting game gave the Broncs by far the best record in the Sun Belt Conference.

Goalie Fredy Sanguinetti of UT Pan American made 10 saves and deflected one attempt that hit the crossbar.

"I think it was the best game we've played at home," said Coach Eloy Moran of the Broncs. "I'm happy for the team--we played really well--we played with heart," said Morquin, who is from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
