UTPA Wins 3-0 Over Trinity

EDINBURG - Demian Morquin of Argentina, Ronny Cabrera of Bolivia and Jesus Tavarez of McAllen kicked the goals that let the University of Texas-Pan American stop stubborn Trinity in soccer Saturday, 3-0.

The Broncs, ranked No. 10 in the Midwest NCAA Division I soccer poll, raised their record to 5-1 going into another home game at 2 p.m. Sunday against Schreiner College of Kerrville.

Trinity is Ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division III and fell to 4-2.

Morquin booted a penalty shot home at 20 minutes. Cabrera made it 2-0 at 37 minutes on an assist by Alector Cardenas of McAllen. Ricardo Ochoa of McAllen started the length-of-field scoring thrust with an over-the-head kick out of the corner.

Leading 2-0 at halftime, the Broncs scored again on Tavarez' late breakaway.

Goalie Fredy Sanguinetti of Uruguay posted his fourth shutout for the Broncs in six games.

Coach Eloy Moran praised UT Pan American's defense, especially Marco Mejia of McAllen, Juan Solis and Shane Hurley of Harlingen and Jose Trujillo of Weslaco. "The defense, including Fredy, played tremendous," Moran said.

Paul McGinlay of England, who coaches Trinity, singled out center-midfielder Mike Hilliard of San Antonio as leading the Tigers.

"During the first half we didn't play well at all," McGinlay said.

"The four-hour journey here today didn't help at all. The second half we created a lot more chances. We had enough opportunites to get ourselves back in it. But all credit goes to Pan American--they defensed well and counter-attacked effectively. They were definitely the winners out there today."
