EDINBURG - Jesus (Chuy) Tavarez of McAllen exploded for three goals Sunday as the University of Texas-Pan American, leading just 2-0 after 55 minutes, spurted late past Schreiner College, 7-0.
The Broncs raised their record to 6-1. Goalie
Fredy Sanguinetti recorded his fifth shutout.
Veterans
Demian Morquin and
Ronny Cabrera each scored one goal, as did freshmen
Shane Hurley of Harlingen and
Miguel Paredes of Edinburg. Hurley and Paredes got their first college goals.
Goalie Corey Sanderford of Schreiner kept the Mountainerrs in the game almost single-handed with 14 saves. The team from Kerrville, outmanned with only 620 students but challenging giants, fell to an 0-6 record. UT Pan American has 12, 500 students.
Morquin's penalty shot and Tavarez' close-up goal, assisted by
Alector Cardenas, put the Broncs up at halftime, 2-0.
It stayed that way for 20 minutes until Cabrera leaped over the diving goalie while shooting the third goal, was kicked in the ankle and had to leave the game. Taverez assisted on that goal.
Hurley rifled home a hard shot, then Tavarez scored twice, one a tap and one a screamer into the corner of the net, within five minutes. Paredes added goal No. 7 with another deft roller past the goalie.
"The first half we played lke we weren't even around," said Bronc Coach Eloy Moran. "Our first compliment goes to the defense--another shutout--Fredy,
Marco Mejia,
Shane Hurley,
Pedro Diaz and
Juan Trujillo."
The Broncs next play at Trinity Oct. 2 and at Schreiner Oct. 3.
