Ribera Slips to Second in National Scoring, Gets Another Crack at Schreiner

KERRVILLE - To warm up for the Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championships, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs will visit their favorite 1992 opponent, Schreiner College, at noon Tuesday.

Mario Ribera took over the NCAA Division I scoring lead for the Broncs when he scored six goals and added six assists as UT Pan-American pounded Schreiner, 16-0 in Edinburg on Oct. 17.

The Broncs havent' played since then. They are well rested with a 9-1 record, the conference's best. They were scheduled to play at Schreiner on Oct. 24 but that game was postponed.

Meanwhile, Ribera was named Freshman of the Year in the Sun Belt Conference Monday--the same day he dropped to second place in national scoring. Rob Ukrop of Davidson College has 60 points (26 goals and eight assists) in 20 games. Ribera has 54 points in nine.

"We hope to help Mario in the scoring race Tuesday," said Coach Eloy Moran.

The Broncs drive on from Kerrville by bus to Mobile Ala., where South Alabama will try to defend the Sun Belt Championship it won on its home field in 1991.

"We'll need a superb match to win over South Alabama on their field," Moran said. "I think we can match up with Arkansas-Little Rock or Western Kentucky or Jacksonville. We have a very good chance against them--I've seen their scores.

"I'd really like to have a good showing in Mobile because my objective is to bring the (Sun Belt) championships down here next year. The good weather here is a factor, and we can take the teams to Mexico."

"It hurt us to be seeded fourth in Mobile this year," Moran added " We will have to play three games in three days, instead of two, to win the championship."

The Broncs open at noon Wednesday against No. 3 seeded Western Kentucky (7-9-2). South Alabama (8-7-2 against a tough schedule) is seeded No. 1 and plays No. 5 Jacksonville at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Second-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock draws the bye and plays the UTPA-WKU winner at noon Friday.
