UTPA Soccer Wins West Texas State Tournament

CANYON, Tex - Victor Ramos scored a goal in each game and added an assist to spark the unbeaten University of Texas-Pan American Broncs to win their second straight tournament.

Ramos, a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Edinburg, was nominated for Player of the Week in the Sun Belt Conference. His teammate Mario Ribera from Bolivia won that honor a week ago.

The Broncs outscored Fort Lewis College of Colorado, 4--1, on Sunday to clinch the West Texas State University Tournament, 2-0.

"We won the tournament on goals difference," said Coach Eloy Moran of UT Pan American. "West Texas State also was 2-0 but they beat Fort Lewis, 3-1, and Southern Colorado, 2-1."

Goalie Albert Flores continued to play spectacularly in the net for the Broncs, who are now 5-0. He posted his third shutout.

Alector Cardenas also scored twice over the weekend. Jorge Cavazos and Ribera nailed the other Bronc goals. Rafael Cardenas was credited with the only assist besides Ramos. The WTS statisticians gave the Broncs just two assists on six goals.

Flores has given up only 0.46 goals per 90 minutes. That statistic puts him among the national leaders. Jose Pacheco, sub goalie, hasn't been scored upon but has player far fewer minutes.

The Broncs have outscored their opponents 22-2 so far.

Next action for the Broncs will be in San Antonio Saturday and Sunday, against Texas Lutheran College and Texas Christian University. Their home opener is Oct. 14 against St. Edward's.

After winning Sunday, the Broncs spent the night at West Texas, then left at 5 a.m. Monday for the 15-hour drive home.
