LITTLE ROCK - Mark Maze stunned the University of Texas-Pan American soccer team with a close-range goal in the first 82 seconds Saturday to spark Arkansas-Little Rock to a rough 4-0 victory.
Arnoldo Cardenas of UTPA was ejected for using his hands to try to stop UALR's second goal, by Jeff Lipa at 18 minutes.
Cardenas got the day's only red card, but there were five yellow-card cautions against each team. The Broncs had 18 fouls and the home Trojans 19.
Mario Ribera, UTPA's No. 2 scorer in the nation last season, missed four of the Bronc 13 shots. Goalie Brian Armstrong of UALR had seven saves. Goalie
Jonathan McCurley of UTPA had four saves on 14 shots at goal.
UTPA takes a 0-3-1 record to North Texas--a member of the Sun Belt Conference for soccer only--at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Eric Jarvis of UTPA, tackled hard, caught a cleat to the knee and was bruised but probably will play Sunday.
Shane Hurley replaced Cardenas as sweeper and did a good job, Coach Eloy Moran said.
"I know the team's a little down after this defeat," Moran said. "They expected better results. But on the road, if we take it to the goal area and don't finish, we can't score. We have to regroup for Sunday morning in Denton."
