UTPA's Soccer Loses 2-1 at SBC Championships

LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas-Little Rock edged the winless University of Texas-Pan American soccer team Friday, 2-1 to start the Sun Belt Conference Championships.

The Broncs ended their frustrating season with an 0-12 record.

Alector Cardenas from McAllen saved UTPA from being shutout by scoring in the final five seconds.

Geoff Thompson, 6-foot-1 senor from York, England, gave UALR a 1-0 lead on a direct kick in the first 2:35 minutes. The Trojans made it 2-0 in the 68th minute when Kevin Slavinski from Richmond, Tex., scored on an assist from Nathan Harris of Little Rock.

Mario Ribera of UTPA took five of the Broncs' nine shots at Goalie Jeff Hulsey of the home team recorded three saves. UALR took 13 shots. Bronc goalie Albert Flores was officially credited with only one save but stopped more.

UTPA was charged with 23 fouls and the home team 21 in a rough contest. 

Ten yellow cards were given, five to each side. Red-card ejections were given to Rafael Cardenas of UTPA and Phillip Liddell of UALR.

UALR's Trojans, now 4-11-33, advance to the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday against top-seeded South Alabama (16-2-2). The other semifinal sends Western Kentucky (8-10) against Jacksonville (7-8-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday. The final is Sunday.
