Soccer Broncs Renew Season Sunday Against Trinity

EDINBURG - Just when they thought their soccer season was over, The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs learned Wednesday they have scheduled another "final" game here Sunday at 2 p.m. against Trinity University.

"Trinity University called us and asked for us to include them in our schedule," said Dr. Miguel Paredes, UTPA Broncs' coach. "Since we haven't played the maximum number of games (20) we can extend our season."

"This only means we will play one less exhibition in the spring."

Trinity's Tigers from San Antonio own a 16-1 record and expect to be invited to the NCAA Division III national playoffs later on Sunday, after their game at the UTPA Soccer Stadium. Trinity ranks No. 9 in the nation and No. 2 in the Central Region of Division III.

The Broncs thought they had finished 4-11 in NCAA Division I last Saturday at home when they defeated Schreiner College, 3-0.

"Some of our players had planned to go out of town when the season ended so we're trying to do what we can to get the most complete team that we can," Dr. Paredes said. "We had our last practice last Friday but we resumed practice today (Wednesday.)"

Despite being near Texas neighbors, 225 miles apart, the two teams have met no common opponents. Trinity's lone loss came to Hope College of Michigan (ranked No. 2 in Division III), 4-1, back on Aug. 31. The Tigers have won 15 straight since then. NCAA Division III teams do not give athletic scholarships.

The Tigers were scheduled for a home game Friday against Salve Regina University of Rhode Island but it canceled its Texas trip.
