Reynaldo Cisneros kicked four goals in the final 11 minutes Friday to turn Texas-Pan American's first soccer victory this season into a rout of Northwood University, 8-1.
Luis Cardenas scored in the first 50 seconds and again in the 15th minute, but UTPA's Broncs led by only 2-1 at the half. Eddie Hernandez got Northwood's goal in the 17th minute.
Sergio Cavazos socred an insurance goal in the 51st minute and it was 3-1 when Cisneros started his incredible attack. He made four of his seven shots after entering the second half with 15 mintues to go.
Cisneros, a 5-11 and 177-pound senior from Brownsville, started his splurge with a two-yarder on Cavazos' neat assist. Then Cisneros blasted in a corner kick from
Pedro Lopez at 83 minutes. Cisneros faked out the goalie for a five-yarder in the 87th minute, and bounced a 20-yarder over the charging goalie in the last minute.
Gabe Serda boomed home a 35-yarder for UTPA's other goal in the 88th minute.
UTPA raised its record to 1-10-1 by scoring eight goals, more than the total of six the Broncs had made in their first 11 games this year. They had given up 42 goals, one by Northwood earlierin a 1-1 tie on the same field Oct. 1.
"I scored seven goals in an exhibition once," said Cisneros, who came close to ending his Bronc career, two games remain, with a rare exhibition of shooting. "I was kicked on my right foot in the second game. It was bruised badly. I couldn't kick for three or four weeks. This is my second week back healthy," the fast forward said.
Cisneros made All-Regional as a scoring star for Brownsville Hanna. He is majoring in Political Science at UTPA and carries a 3.0-plus GPA. "Hopefully I'm headed for law school next year," he said.
Coach Jorge Canales of Northwood said the Knights played the game under protest over the starting time. Northwood is now 3-5-1.
