Broncs Teach STCC Soccer Lesson, 6-0

EDINBURG - Seniors Luis Cardenas and Rey Cisneros taught South Texas Community College a soccer lesson Saturday when Texas-Pan American dominated its first sports event with STCC, 6-0.

Cardenas pulled out STCC's young goalkeeper, freshman Guadalupe Reyes of Donna, to hit an unprotected net in the first four minutes on Cisneros slick assist. Cardenas scored again on a one-yard tap in the 49th minute on Daniel Ausucua's perfect pass.

STCC couldnt' cope with UTPA's older, more experienced players but put up a spirited fight, trailing the half, 3-0.

Sergio Cavazos netted Jaime Pruneda's cross for a 5-yard goal in the fifth minute as the Broncs made their first two shots.

Cisneros scored in the 20th minute when he lobbed a 20-yard free kick over the defensive wall. Pedro Lopez scored the same way, a 25-yard lob over the wall, in the 77th minute.

Danny Cortez nailed UTPA's other goal in the 56th minute on a header off Enrique Serda's corner kick.

Steve Beckman, freshman from Mission, left the field in the first half with blood streaming from his forearm, but he wasn't hurt by any Bronc. He slid in the grass and reopened a scab on an arm cut.

Miguel Lopez of STCC and Ausucua were ejected for shoving in the 64th minute but the first ever Bronc-STCC sports event was played with sportsmanship. Goalies Marcelo Paredes and Roger Cantu shared the shutout before 250. STCC took 11 shots, UTPA 23.

"We're excited that our neighbors at STCC praised Cardenas and Cisneros as being difficult for his younger players to stop. STCC will play Texas-Austin in San Antonio Sunday to try to make the playoffs at its level.

UTPA ended its schedule with a 2-10-1 official record. NCAA Division I teams cannot count games against two-year colleges.
