Former UT - Pan American hurler and current Houston Astros pitching coach Jim Hickey will be appearing at the 2nd Annual Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Monte Cristo Golf Course and Country Club on January 22nd.
Hickey, a former All-American, was named pitching coach for the Astros during the summer of 2004 and helped lead the squad to a Wild Card berth in the 2004 National League Playoffs. Under Hickey's watch, future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens captured 10 of his 18 wins along with winning his seventh Cy Young Award at the age of 42.
The former Bronc led UTPA to a record-setting 63 wins during the 1983 season and was a first team All-American pitcher. That season, he set UTPA pitching records for most wins (16) and most complete games (16) in a season, both of which still stand today. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the 1983 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Hickey will be the featured alumni guest for the 2nd Annual Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament, which all proceeds will go towards the scholarship fund for the 2005-06 academic year. In the tournament's first year, the field consisted of 85 participants and raised $14,000 into the scholarship fund. With the money raised, the baseball program is in position to be fully-funded for the first time.
