Jan. 8, 2005

Box Score

The University of Texas - Pan American women's basketball team suffered a 50-41 setback to Northern Arizona University due to a poor shooting performance and an aggressive NAU performance on the boards. The Lumberjacks out-rebounded the Lady Broncs, 42-26, and UTPA finished the game shooting 28.6 percent from the floor.

The Lady Broncs were able to keep the game close in the first eight minutes of play, but NAU controlled the lead from start to finish. UTPA would stay within two points after Kathy Guin (Guthrie, OK/Guthrie H.S.) converted at the line to take the score to 7-5 at the 12:19 mark in first half action. NAU would then build on its lead seeing aggressive play offensively from Nicky Easton, who would finish the first half 4-5 from the floor for nine points.

The Lumberjacks would then take their largest lead of the half, 25-11, with 1:06 to go before intermission. With a late surge on offense, junior Dominique Montage (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College) would hit a jumper followed by a defensive stop that would lead to a Guin lay-up to get the team to within 10 at 25-16, heading into the locker room.

In the second half, the Lady Broncs would look to the post play of Molly Schamel (Hector, NY/Yavapai College) to keep them in the game. Schamel finished with 12 points, nine of them coming in second half action.

UTPA would cut the lead to eight points after another aggressive drive inside from Guin with 5:38 to play. The Lady Bronc freshman would also finish the game with 12 points, shooting 5-13 from the floor. With her outside shot being contested, Guin went to the drive scoring 10 of her points in the paint where UTPA would out-score NAU, 20-14.

With under a minute to play, Guin would score again to cut the lead to six 45-39. A jumper by Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) would then cut it to four, but that would be as close as the Lady Broncs would come before the game ended.

UTPA sent The Lumberjacks to the line for six opportunities within the last 20 seconds of play. NAU converted on 5-6 of those free throws to take the victory 50-41. NAU's Easton would finish with a game-high 14 points and five rebounds.

While Guin and Shamel would lead UTPA in scoring, MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) would finish the game with five points along with 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Lady Broncs will return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 11) at home against Prairie View A&M tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
