Oral Roberts' All-American Dennis Bigley tossed 8.1 innings and limited The University of Texas-Pan American offense to three runs as the Golden Eagles picked up the 7-3 victory at JL Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, OK, on Friday (Mar. 18).
Bigley gave up only five hits on the day while striking out six Bronc hitters en route to upping his record to a perfect 4-0 on the season. In the game, he tied a program record with 34 career wins.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the third inning when Brian Aguailar singled then was driven home by a Travis DeBondt double to give ORU a 1-0 advantage. Aguailar and DeBondt both picked up a pair of hits in the game to lead the Golden Eagles' offense.
Following a Tim Torres home run in the fourth inning off of UTPA starter Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.), Oral Roberts broke up the game with a five-run fifth inning. It was the combination of Aguailar and DeBondt that started the rally while both added hits and scored runs in the process. Michael Hollimon drilled a triple that scored DeBondt and gave ORU a 6-0 lead.
The Broncs scored two runs in the top half of the seventh inning when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) drove home both Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin C.C.) and Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) to cut the lead to 7-2. Freshman Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) added a pinch hit home run in the top of the ninth inning, but the hits came a little too late for the Broncs.
Guerra suffered his first loss of the season and dropped his record to 3-1 as he tossed 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. The duo of Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) and Steven Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) held ORU hitless over the final four innings of action.
With the victory, Oral Roberts improves its record to 10-6 on the season while the Broncs dropped to 8-17.
The Broncs and Golden Eagles will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 19) at 2:00 for game two of the three-game series.
