Broncs Drop Third Straight to ORU

The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team was swept by ORU as the Golden Eagles were victorious 6-0 in the final game of the series Sunday (Mar. 20). Both teams were scoreless in the first seven innings of play before ORU would have a six-run inning en route to capturing the win.

The Broncs struggles offensively only recording two hits in the contest. Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) would connect on the first in the second inning with a single to center field, but the ORU defense would prove strong to end the inning. The Broncs would not connect again at the plate until the sixth inning with a single from Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.).

Both teams were strong defensively until the Broncs slipped in the eighth inning giving up six ORU runs on four hits. The inning was highlighted by a double from ORU's Ricky Rivera who recorded three RBI off the hit.

The Broncs pitching staff suffered the loss only recording three strikeouts all of them coming from Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McClennan J.C.) as he pitched the first 6.0 innings of the contest. Bobby Gomez (Falfurrias, TX/Falfurrias H.S.) posted the loss giving up the four runs in the eighth, and his record dropped to 1-2 due to the setback.

UTPA gave up nine hits to ORU and they were able to hold on to the late inning lead as the Broncs were unable to make anything happened offensively with their last at-bat in the ninth inning. Alamia and Smith were the only UTPA batters to record hits, and Smith posted 10 put-outs while playing first base to keep ORU scoreless in the early innings. The third loss in the series dropped the team to 8-19 on the season.

UTPA will be back in action at home on Tuesday (Mar. 22) in a single-game against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at 6:15 p.m. played at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
