Aggies Top Broncs In Two Matches

The University of Texas - Pan American men's tennis team traveled to College Station, TX on Wednesday (April 13) to play Texas A&M in a doubleheader. The matches were played using an alternative match scoring system with all matches being worth one point.

UTPA's Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) played in the top singles slot in the opening match and fell, 6-1 and 6-0, to the Aggies 23-ranked Jerry Makowski.

In other singles action, A&M's Ante Matijevic beat Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial), 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot, while UTPA's Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/AF North International School) was defeated, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.

The doubles match saw UTPA's top team of Jeremy Salvo (Conquitlam, B.C., Canada/Centennial Secondary) and Rehman Esmail (Conquitlam, B.C., Canada/North Carolina State) finished off by Zack Malmgren and Bryan Wooten in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The Aggies would take every match to post the 5-0 victory.

The Broncs were unable to rebound, and fell 5-0 in the second match of the doubleheader. Salvo played in the top spot and lost, 7-5, 6-2, to Matijevic, while Porter would suffer another loss in the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-1, against Wooten.

The match concluded with the A&M duo of Dash Connell and Brett Joelson defeating Bianco and Steil, 7-5, 6-4. The two matches moved the Aggies to 11-6 on the season, while the Broncs dropped to 6-9.

The Broncs will be back on the courts on Saturday (April 16) playing Trinity University at 2:00 p.m. in San Antonio, TX.
