Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) tossed a complete game on the mound as the UTPA starter improved his record to 2-1 in the Broncs' 6-1 victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday (Apr. 23) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

With the victory, the Broncs improved their record to 14-30 on the season while Western Kentucky dropped to 12-26.

Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Broncs were able to add four runs to take a 5-0 advantage. UTPA pounded out four hits in that frame, including a RBI-single from Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.), who currently leads the team with 30 RBI on the season.

Broyles also added a big hit in that frame as he drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field. Following a sacrifice bunt by Raul Rodriguez (Pharr, TX/UT - Brownsville), the Broncs upped their lead to 5-0 when an infield single by Ruben Shives, Jr. (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) drove in Eichel.

UTPA was able to add another insurance run in the eighth inning when Eichel reached on a WKU fielding error. He would later score on another fielding error on the part of the Hilltoppers.

Broyles struck out five and walked only two as the senior improved his record to 2-1 on the season. Stephen Muck suffered the loss and dropped his record to 0-2 on the season after tossing five innings, allowing five runs - four earned - on four hits. He struck out five and walked two.

The Broncs and Hilltoppers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday (Apr. 24) with game time set for 10:00 a.m.
