Box Score
After taking the first two games of the three-game series with Western Kentucky University, The University of Texas - Pan American dropped the third game of the series, 7-4, on Sunday (April 24) in their final home contest at the Ediburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs went to work early after Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) started the game off with a double to left field in the opening frame. He would then advance to third on a ground out, and home on a balk to give the Broncs a 1-0 lead. Alamia would then hit an RBI single in the second inning, while in the third teammate Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) would do the same to build the lead to 3-0 headed into the fourth inning of play.
In the top of the fourth, the Hilltoppers would finally get their offense going scoring four runs off of four hits in the inning. UTPA would then respond with a run in the bottom of the frame after Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) grounded out to second base, but score J.P. Mackie (McAllen, TX/Sharyland H.S.) who was in scoring position at third base.
With the game tied, 4-4, both teams would go scoreless in the fifth inning before WKU would take the two-run lead scoring two runs off of two hits in the innings. Their defense would then hold the Broncs in their next two at-bats, while they would go on to score one more in the seventh to take the lead, 7-4.
In the late innings of play, UTPA was unable to score dropping them to 14-31 on the season. Alamia and Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) lead the way each collecting two hits, while the team recorded only three RBI in the contest.
Suffering the loss on the mound for the Broncs was Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) who struck out three batters and gave up 11 hits in his six innings on the mound. The loss takes his record to 5-4 on the season. WKU's Kenny Griffin posted the win to improve his record to 4-5 while moving the team to 13-26 on the season.
The Broncs will now take to the road for the remainder of the season starting on Tuesday (April 26) with a game against TCU in Fort Worth, TX at 7:00 p.m.
