Miners Hammer Lady Broncs at Home, 80-34

The University of Texas at El Paso outscored the UTPA women's basketball team by a 48-15 margin in the second half en route to an 80-34 victory at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, TX, on Monday (Jan. 2).

The Lady Broncs played tight with the Miners throughout the first half and were only down at 32-19 heading into intermission. UTPA was unable to get its offense moving in the first half as the Lady Broncs only shot 30.0 percent (6-20) during the first 20 minutes, but their defense held UTEP to 32.3 percent (10-31) during that time.

In the second half, the Miners found their shooting touch as UTEP came out and shot 60.0 percent (15-25) from the field, including 75.0 percent (6-8) from behind the three-point arc and 66.7 percent (12-18) at the free throw line. The Lady Broncs were cold in the second half as they shot 19.2 percent (5-26), including 11.1 percent (1-9) from behind the three-point arc, which resulted in being outscored 48-15.

Tay Hester finished with a game-high 17 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes of action while Izabela Piekarska finished with a double-double (points-rebounds) with an 11-point, 11-rebound performance. Kasia Krezel collected 13 points, and Ana Valtierra notched 11 points and eight rebounds. UTEP point guard Shalana Taylor posted nine points, seven assists, two steals and two rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

The Miners' defense forced UTPA to committ 23 miscues in the game, which resulted in a 29-0 advantage in points off of turnovers. UTEP also held the edge in steals (12-4), rebounds (42-35) and assists (19-10).

The Lady Broncs were led by Robin Garrett, who scored a team-high seven points, and Dominique Montague added six points on a pair of three-point field goals.

UTPA dropped its record to 4-11 on the season while UTEP improved to 8-5.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Jan. 6) in Flagstaff, AZ, as UTPA will travel to Northern Arizona. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
