The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team held the lead at the half but could not keep the pace in the second half, losing 65-48 on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The first half of the game saw the score tied six times, but the Lady Broncs held the lead a majority of the half. UTPA didn't trail during the last 16 minutes of the first stanza and built their lead to as many as eight points with 12:33 left on the clock. UTPA shot 54 percent from the field in the first half and made 3-8 from behind the three-point line. The Lady Broncs led 37-35 at halftime.
The second half was a different story for the Lady Broncs as they connected on just four field goals in 16 attempts. The Jackrabbits scored 30 points in the second half but were able to hold UTPA to just 11. SDSU scored half of their second-half points on three-pointers on 33 percent shooting from behind the arc.
Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) led the Lady Broncs in scoring with nine points on 2-6 shooting. Reed hit on 1-5 from behind the three-point arc and 4-4 from the charity stripe. The UTPA senior also dished out seven assists, tying her career-best, and pulled down three rebounds.
Junior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) led the team with a game-high seven rebounds while also scoring four points. Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College) added seven points, connecting on 3-8 from the field and 1-5 from three-point range.
SDSU guard Heather Sieler led all players in scoring with 17 points. Sieler also recorded six steals and three assists. Jennifer Warkenthien and Megan Vogel both finished the night with double-digits in points with 11 and 10 respectively.
UTPA finished with a slightly higher shooting percentage than SDSU and out-rebounded the Jackrabbits by a slim 31-30 margin. The Lady Broncs won the rebounding battle in the first half 18-10. UTPA turned the ball over 22 times compared to just 13 miscues by the Jackrabbits.
The Lady Broncs' record falls to 5-18 while the Jackrabbits improve to 15-8 with the win.
UTPA plays again on Wednesday (Feb. 15) in Edinburg, TX at the UTPA Fieldhouse with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
