The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team was unable to overcome a turnover-plagued contest as the Lady Broncs dropped a 62-46 decision at IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN, on Saturday (Feb. 18).
The Lady Broncs and Mastodons were almost identical on the stat sheet until it came to the turnover category where UTPA committed 24 miscues compared to 13 by the home squad. As a result, IPFW was able to take advantage of the contest by securing a 21-14 edge over the Lady Broncs in points off of turnovers.
In a tightly-play first half, the Lady Broncs were able to overcome an early five-point deficit to take a four-point advantage at 12-8 following a lay-in by senior guard Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.). The Mastodons tied up the contest at 12-12 with 5:54 remaining in the first half after Nanyamka Moore converted on one of two free throw attempts.
During the final 4:38 seconds of the first frame, the Mastodons were able to take advantage of the game as they concluded the frame on a 13-4 run highlighted by a three-pointer by Ashley Lewis-Carlisle with six seconds remaining to give IPFW a 25-16 edge at intermission.
In the first half, neither team was able to find their shooting touch as the Lady Broncs only connected on 26.9 percent (7-26) of their shots compared to 23.5 percent (8-34) by IPFW. The Lady Broncs committed 13 first-half turnovers, which the Mastodons were able to convert to 10 points during the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half of action, the Mastodons were able to build their lead to 13 points at 34-21 when Lewis-Carlisle was able to convert a lay-in and free throw prior to the first media timeout of the second half. Following a three-pointer by senior Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College), the Lady Broncs were able to cut the deficit to 10 points at 37-27 with 12:20 remaining in the second half.
After a steal and lay-in by Reed, the Lady Broncs once again cut into the lead at 10 points at 42-32 with 8:45 left in the second half, but IPFW went on a 9-0 run during the next two minutes to take a 51-32 lead with 6:11 left in the game.
Following the offensive run for the Mastodons, IPFW was able to build its lead to as many as 25 points in the second half following a lay-in by Tina Moen with 2:38 remaining in the game. The Lady Broncs made a late run at the end of the game, but were unable to make a serious threat to the Mastodon's 62-46 triumph.
Lewis-Carlisle led all scorers in the game with 19 points, converting on 6-15 attempts including 4-8 from behind the three-point arc. Ashley Johnson finished with 17 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds in 38 minutes of action for the Mastodons.
Reed finished with a team-high 16 points for the Lady Broncs, converting on 4-11 attempts from the field and 7-10 from the free throw line. She also dished out a game-high five assists in 39 minutes of action. MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) finished with eight rebounds while Rachel Jones (Little Rock, AR/Central H.S.) collected seven rebounds.
As a team, IPFW shot 33.3 percent (20-60) in the game while the Lady Broncs converted on 37.0 percent (17-46) in the game. In the second half of action, UTPA was able to connect on 50.0 percent (10-20) of its field goal attempts.
With the victory, IPFW improved its record to 3-20 on the season while the Lady Broncs dropped to 6-19.
