Poor Shooting Dooms Lady Broncs in Loss to Oregon State

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered as the Lady Broncs lost their third consecutive game on Monday (Feb. 27) to the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, OR by a score of 79-34.

Oregon State opened the scoring with its first basket at the 17:57 mark to make the score 2-0 and never relinquished after. UTPA pulled within one on a Whitney Coulson (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Lancer H.S.) lay-up with 11:18 left in the first half but trailed by 10 five minutes later. The Beavers built their first half lead to 37-21 when both teams headed to the locker room at the half.

Oregon State opened the second half on a 12-1 run, stretching their lead to 27 just five minutes in to the half. UTPA was unable to slow down the Beavers the rest of the way as Oregon State steadily increased their lead throughout the final 15 minutes of the game.

Freshman Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) led the Lady Broncs in scoring, netting 11 points on 4-7 shooting, including 3-5 from the charity stripe. Winfrey also had three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 26 minutes on the floor.

Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College) also finished the game in double-figures, connecting on 4-12 from the field and 2-7 from behind the three-point arc. MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) ended the night with six points and four rebounds while also adding two blocks and three steals.

Oregon State's Kim Butler led all players in scoring, posting 24 points and nine rebounds. Two other Beavers finished in double-digits with Mandy Close scoring 19 and Karen Vickery netting 15.

Poor shooting doomed the Lady Broncs as they made just 27 percent (14-52) of their attempts from the field. The Beavers, on the other hand, made 54 percent (28-52) of their shots from the floor and also connected on 95 percent of their free throw attempts. UTPA turned the ball over 21 times and was out-rebounded by a 37-27 margin.

The loss brings the Lady Broncs' record to 6-21 on the season, 0-14 on the road. Oregon State improved their season record to 14-13 with the victory.

The Lady Broncs conclude their season on Saturday (Mar. 4) in the UTPA Fieldhouse against the Utah Valley State Wolverines with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
