Lady Broncs Suffer 78-55 Road Setback

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season against South Dakota State University when they dropped a 78-55 road decision in Billings, SD, at the Frost Arena on Thursday (Feb. 15).

The setback puts the Lady Broncs at 10-16 on the season while the Jackrabbits improved to 19-5.

The Lady Broncs only lead of the game came at the 17:06 mark in the first half with the score 6-5. It was only fitting that SDSU's Megan Vogel hit a three-point shot on the ensuing possession to make the score 8-6 and put her team up for good.

After Vogel's trey, SDSU out-scored the Lady Broncs 37-18 heading into intermission with Vogel accounting for 14 of the Jackrabbit's 42 first half points.

SDSU headed to the locker room with a 42-24 lead on the Lady Broncs while shooting 44.1 percent on 15-of-34 shots compared to UTPA with 39.1 percent on 9-of-23 from the field. The Jackrabbits took advantage of 16 Lady Bronc miscues by collecting 12 points off turnovers in the first half to the Lady Bronc's four.

The Lady Broncs dug themselves a hole they couldn't get out of in the final 20 minutes of play as they were able to only come within 13 points of the Jackrabbits by going on a 12-7 run out of the gate.

LeKeisha Gray (Muskogee, OK/Butler County C.C.) was the only Lady Bronc in double-figures with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 6-of-8 from behind the arc while adding three steals in 37 minutes of play.

The Jackrabbits were led by Vogel who scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-16 from the field, including 6-of-11 from three-point range while recording six rebounds and three steals in the game.

As a team, the Lady Broncs shot 40.7 percent on 22-of-54 from the field compared to the Jackrabbit's 41.8 percent on 28-of-67 shooting. The difference in the game came in the form of Lady Bronc miscues as they committed 26 turnovers which accounted for 18 SDSU points. The Jackrabbits out-rebounded the Lady Broncs by a 43-30 margin and out-scored UTPA in the paint 30-10.

The Lady Broncs return to action on Saturday (Feb. 17) when they head north to Fargo, ND, to take on North Dakota State University with tip scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
