Broncs Suffer 85-58 Setback to Cal-Berkeley

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program suffered an 85-58 setback to the University of California-Berkeley Thursday (Nov. 20) night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, CA.

The Broncs held the lead against the Golden Bears for the first 3:08 of play but turned it over when Cal-Berkeley's Theo Robertson scored two for the Golden Bears giving Cal a one-point lead with 16:52 on the clock.

The Broncs were able to catch up and tie the score at 11 with a shot from behind the arc by junior Ben Smith at 15:28 but were unable to hold on as the Golden Bears regained the lead. UTPA came across their largest deficit of 17 at 3:20 on the clock when Cal's Omondi Amoke scored two more for the Golden Bears making the score 37-20.

The Broncs entered halftime trailing by 14 with a score of 39-25. At the half, the Broncs recorded 11-of-20 shooting from the field with 2-of-6 from behind the arc and 1-of-2 from the line.

The Broncs continued to trail behind the Golden Bears as Cal slowly widened their lead throughout the second half. The Broncs were taken to the line 13 times making 10 of their free throws finishing with 76.9 percent from the line, while only committing three of their 12 fouls in the second.

UTPA had the final shot of the game as P.J. Turner fired from behind the arc scoring three but still wasn't enough to catch up to Cal-Berkeley.

Emmanuel Jones finished in double-figures for the Broncs as he collected 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the line to go along with four boards and one steal.

Nathan Hawkins finished the night with 10 points with 4-of-8 shooting from the field with a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe along with a game-high seven rebounds.

The Broncs head to Colorado Springs as they compete in the Reggie Minton Classic hosted by Air Force Academy at Clune Arena this Friday, Nov. 21. The Broncs face Wofford College on Friday (Nov.21) with their second match up on Saturday (Nov. 22) against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Both games are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
