Broncs Close Out Season with Win

The UTPA men's basketball team's (18-13) closed out the season with a 78-68 win over the Savannah State (13-18) on Thursday (Feb.28) at Tiger Arena.

The Broncs end the season on a four game winning-streak and with 11 wins away from the UTPA Fieldhouse, which is a greater total than they had over the last four years.

The Broncs got off to a slow start, as it took 3:25 for senior guard Brian Burrell (Nacogdoches, TX) to hit the first Broncs bucket, making it 6-2 Tigers.

The Broncs went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-14 lead with 6:10 to play in the first half.

The Broncs held the lead until there was 8:30 to play when Savannah State took a 44-43 lead.

The Broncs only trailed for 25 seconds, though as senior guard Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX) drained a three-pointer to make it 46-44 Broncs. The Broncs never trailed again.

Shankle finished with a season-high 20 points on 6-7 shooting, including 4-5 from downtown.

The Broncs shot 73.7% in the second half (14-19), including 7-10 from behind the arc and 19-27 from the foul line.

For the game the Broncs shot 53.3% (24-45) from the field while the Tigers shot 39.0% (23-59).

Senior guard Paul Stoll (Lansing, MI) ended up with a great all around game of 18 points, six assists three steals and three rebounds.

The six seniors went out with a bang, combining for 61 points - 78% of the Broncs total offense.
