After playing two matches this past weekend in San Marcos and San Antonio the University of Texas Pan American women's tennis team was back in action against Texas A&M Corpus Christi here at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Lady Broncs (1-4) suffered a 6-1 defeat to the Lady Islanders (3-3).
"We definitely played better than on the weekend," said assistant coach Oliver Steil. "But we need to be more aggressive."
In the first spot of the doubles competition Mirna Cicak and Nadia Filmalter handed Stephanie Willerding and Andrea Salvetova a close 8-6 loss. Juniors Megan Bedeau and Luisa Cantu suffered a 8-4 defeat at the hands of Nina Ciric and Megan Harless. In the third spot Erika Iriarte and Alexandra Dyckman defeated Malin Anderson and Sarah Burton 9-7.
"Overall we improved on our doubles given how we did, but we need to be more aggressive," Steil said.
In singles action the first spot saw Cicak defeat Willerding 6-1, 6-4. The second spot Cantu captured the Lady Broncs' only victory as she took care of Filmalter with ease 6-2, 6-0. The third spot Ciric handed the captain, Bedeau a 6-4, 6-2 setback while in the fourth spot Iriarte defeated freshman Salvetova 6-1, 6-1. In the fifth spot Dyckman and Anderson took the match to three sets but Dyckman would win 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. In the final spot of the day Mersan defeated Burton 6-3, 6-3.
The Lady Broncs are back in action again on Friday (Feb. 20) as they take on the University of Texas El Paso in Las Cruces, N.M. The Lady Broncs will also match up against New Mexico State and Northern Arizona at the same venue.
