After inclement weather forced game one of the scheduled double-header to be scratched, the Broncs (11-37) dropped a 7-4 road decision to the Northern Colorado Bears this Sunday (May 10) afternoon at Jackson Field in Greeley, Colorado.
Both ball clubs got off to a slow start as each club remained scoreless in the first four innings of play. The fifth inning was the break-out inning for both teams as UTPA and Northern Colorado scored two runs each.
The Broncs scored their runs in back-to-back plays as Jose Mendoza scored on a bases loaded walk followed by a Bonham Hough run on a sacrifice fly to left by Garrett Bivone.
UTPA added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run bomb to left field by Bonham Hough driving in Jose Mendoza to make the score 4-2.
The Broncs allowed the Bears to score five runs in the seventh, which would conclude the evenings contest, with four of those runs off two-run homeruns and another on a sacrifice fly by Andy Mees.
Sunday's contest would also serve as Northern Colorado's senior night as they had six seniors on the playing field.
Leadoff batter Bonham Hough finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, runs and stolen bases and one homerun and double. Third baseman Jose Mendoza added a 1-for-3 plate appearance with two runs and a double.
Starting pitcher Scott Wingo (3-6) was tagged with the loss for his sixth loss of the season, while Northern Colorado's Nate Steinmetz (2-4) notched his second win of the season.
With the first game scratched, the Broncs and Bears will have a double-header tomorrow (May 11) with the first contest scheduled for 11:00 a.m. MT.
