NORMAN, Oklahoma – Forward Ce'Monay Newell scored a game high 23 points but the University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team dropped their third straight game, falling to Gardner-Webb 82-54 Sunday afternoon at the BTI Invitational on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
The Broncs (4-3) could not escape the hot start of the Bulldogs (3-3), who began the game on an 18-3 run, capped off by a Jasmine Dale three-pointer. The Broncs would fall behind by as many as 23 points in the first half and trailed 39-17 at the half. The Broncs, who had been a hot-shooting team during their recent homestand, shot just 27% from the field in the first half.
The Bulldogs were hot in the second half as well beginning. Gardner-Webb ran off a 17-4 run and led 56-21 with 13:29 remaining in regulation. After trailing 66-36, the Broncs began to chip away at the Bulldog lead. The Broncs scored the next seven points to pull within 23 points. The Broncs were outscored by only six points in the second half, 43-37. The UTPA offense improved immensely in the final twenty minutes as they shot 43% from the field and made six of their 10 three-point attempts.
Bianca Torre could not find the hot hand she unveiled earlier in the tournament as she was just 2-14 from the field and scored just seven points. Donna Jackson also added seven points and rebounds while Adanna Opara scored five points and hauled in five boards for UTPA.
The Bulldogs were led my Monique Hudson's 20 points. She also added five rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Brianna Dillard chipped in with 11 points and four assists. Dominique Hudson added 10 points and seven assists, while Breynna Winkler scored 10 points with eight rebounds to round out the top scorers for the Bulldogs.
The Broncs continue their road swing on Wednesday night when they travel to Nacogdoches, TX and battle with the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
